Research Centres and Public Service

Research

Gaspé has two major research centres. One of them is Merinov, which employs close to 100 people, and is the largest integrated centre for applied research in the fields of fishery, aquaculture, aquatic processing and refining in Canada.

Formerly known as TechnoCentre éolien, Nergica is an applied research centre that drives innovation in renewable energy. With a multidisciplinary team consisting of approximately 20 people, it conducts research and technology transfer activities and offers technical assistance and support for businesses and communities.

Education

Aside from being an important knowledge hub in Gaspésie, the city of Gaspé has several educational institutions, particularly for higher education. In particular, you’ll find head offices of Cégep de la Gaspésie et des Îles and, Commission scolaire des Chic-Chocs, Groupe Collegia, several elementary and secondary schools, as well as two vocational training centers. The Centre québécois de formation en maintenant éolienne and the Comité sectoriel de main-d’œuvre des pêches maritimes complete the region’s offering.

Health and Social Services

Located in Gaspé, the head office of Centre intégré de santé et de services sociaux de la Gaspésie (CISSSG) oversees 49 facilities throughout the region, including 10 in the greater Gaspé: a hospital, family medicine unit, health centre, accommodation centre, CLSCs, rehabilitation centres, etc. The CISSSG thus provides employment for several hundred people.

Financial Incentives – Workforce in Health and Social Services

In order to alleviate the workforce shortage in Gaspésie’s health and social services sector, two financial incentives were set up:

  • Scholarships for students in health and social services;
  • Exemption from the Canada Student Loan Reimbursement for Family Physicians and Nurses.

National Park and Government Departments – Administrative centres and Regional Departments

Located in Gaspé, Forillon National Park is managed by Parks Canada and employs approximately 100 people who work every day to protect its environment and to preserve its historic sites and marine conservation areas.

Gaspé is also the home of several regional administrative centres of federal and provincial departments that employ hundreds of people.
